One of the most fulfilling and serene ways that one can enjoy nature is by taking a pleasant hike (especially if the mountains are as beautiful as those surrounding Park City). The spring season is one of the best times to do this, as the snow is melting and the flowers are blooming, but the heat of the summer hasn’t taken hold, yet. However, it’s important to remember that nature is a vast and powerful place to be, and if you don’t take the proper precautions, you could be in big trouble. Here’s some tips on mountain hiking safety…
Always be mindful of the weather
The different precautions that you must take to be safe on a hiking trip are largely dependent on what the weather will be like. Always check the weather before your trip to get an idea of what you need to bring along, and how you need to dress. While you are out on your trip, also make sure to keep an eye on what the sky looks like, as the weather can sometimes be unpredictable.
Pack energy food
You need to make sure that you stay energized and hydrated on your hike, as the level of physical exertion that a hike will require is sure to take a lot out of you. Be sure to pack light food that is full of energy. Fruit, granola, jerky, and energy bars are all food that fit this bill. Trail mix is also very popular, for this reason. Most importantly, though, make sure to bring a good amount of water along, and stay hydrated. Dehydration on a hike greatly increases the risks of medical complications, such as a stroke.
Whatever the weather looks like that day, make sure that you dress properly for the occasion. Wear hardy shoes with good grip on the soles, so that you can make sure you have good footing. While you want to dress warm for the cold, make sure not to overdress, as this will increase sweating and make you more dehydrated.
Have a first aid kit
The number one thing to remember is that accidents happen in life, and especially during physical activities like hiking. Always be prepared for the worst by keeping a first aid kit, and make sure that you are educated on how to use it. It’s a good idea to have some first aid training, or go on the trip with someone who does.
