Short Range Forecast Discussion

DETAILED SUMMARY FOR THE WEEK -> UPDATED FOR THURSDAY, December 6…Today and Friday –MORE LIGHT SNOW FOR NORTHERN UTAH– -> Both days look colder, especially Friday, as a weather disturbance is moving away with light snow today, but drier as you go south from Salt Lake City and the northern Wasatch Mountains (more isolated snow showers for Brian Head). On Friday we see large scale, cold and strong low pressure carving a trough across the western US, with the axis over land and east of California (upper-level high pressure ridge to the west). Lighter and more isolated snow showers (just like in Colorado), along with more sun breaks, are expected on Friday as moisture decreases in advance of a cold and fairly strong storm coming in for northern Utah. Again, mostly just some clouds mixed with plenty of sun are expected for southern Utah today and Friday.
Saturday and Sunday –SNOW ACROSS ALL AREAS, BEST FOR NORTHERN UTAH– -> Snowfall is looking like it should be moderate (by Utah standards) across northern Utah on Saturday, and lighter later Saturday and Sunday for southern Utah as stronger and very cold low pressure dives in from out of the northwest. This system is currently sitting up in the Gulf of Alaska, and moisture availability plus the track of the storm is in question after crossing Canada(so we are not going bonkers with snowfall totals), but this storm is capable of being a big one for northern Utah due to strong jet stream winds, a strong cold front, and healthy dynamics at most levels of the atmosphere. The system may still close off and drop south (though this possibility is fading, which would deliver more snow to southern Utah. Sunday could end up very cold with light, lingering snow showers.
Monday through Wednesday –2 MORE STORMS– -> A wintry pattern continues, with another Gulf of Alaska storm (shortwave) moving through possibly Monday or early Tuesday then another storm moves in on Wednesday. It looks again like northern resorts may be favored, but all areas could see snow. Significant snowfall is possible all totaled for northern Utah, and, there are more to come…CM
